A sudden onset of itchiness can have many causes. It is, in itself, not an illness but only a symptom.
If the skin reddens, burns and itches, the causes may be a slight sunburn but also allergenic medication, cosmetics, sunscreen products and some food such as nuts and strawberries. To clarify the actual cause, persons affected should pay an early visit to the doctor. Even if the actual cause is still unclear, many expect direct help at the pharmacy and ask for medication for their complaints. This also applies when on holiday or a business stay abroad.
Before any medicine can be recommended PTA or the pharmacist needs to ask the person concerned some questions and clarify if self-medication can be responsibly commended. For short-term relief, gels and creams containing corticoid or an antihistamine can be used. If the skin is severely inflamed and appears yellowish, the person concerned must see a doctor. The same applies if children are affected.
